Related Existing Technologies

Instead of using current robotic surgical platforms such as da Vinci, our technology leverages the idea of tiny robots cooperating to achieve surgical goals. To do this, Pediabots will use a combination of robotic surgery, MEMS technologies, and planning and flocking algorithms to make surgery more precise and accessible.

Robotic Surgery

  • Robotic surgery uses robotic principles and networking to assist surgeons.

  • Robotic surgery is performed by automated systems but controlled by the surgeon from afar.

  • Two of the most commonly used include the ZEUS and the da Vinci robotic surgery systems.

  • Robotic surgery is expensive, requires extensive training, and is still subject to errors due to imprecision of the human surgeon.

MEMS

  • MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) is the technology of tiny devices with electronic and mechanical parts.

  • MEMS components are created using techniques such as silicon lithography, injection molding, embossing, and self-assembly.

  • MEMS technologies are undergoing rapid innovations, seeing vast reductions in size and cost along with improvements in reliability and quality features such as reduction in noise.

  • Although MEMS is used in consumer products, such as cars, printers, and phones, it is not widely used in surgery today.

Our
Story

Computational Algorithms

  • Flocking algorithms are algorithms used to navigate and coordinate groups of nodes in a cohesive fashion. They are used in video games, movies, and swarming simulations.

  • Planning algorithms use formal logics and math to derive optimal sequences of actions to achieve a goal.

  • Flocking and planning algorithms are not usually used together or used in the application of surgery.
