HISTORY OF DRUG DELIVERY

From oral medication to the modern transdermal delivery system

Drug Formulation

SmithKline Beecham developed the first sustained drug formulation.

1940s-1955

Dissolution

Dissolution-controlled release mechanism becomes most widely used delivery method

1955-1970s

Peptides/Proteins

Biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) was designed for elongated delivery of peptide and protein drugs.

1970s-1985

Hydrogels

Environmentally-sensitive Hydrogels were designed with self-regulated release abilities

1985-2000s

Polymers

Smart polymers have signal specificity and sensitivity.

2000s-2010

Graphene Patch

Present day graphene patches incorporates gold meshes for sensing and electrosensitive response. Surface microneedles provide noninvasive drug delivery.

2010-present
