Current Technology Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is still not a completely developed technology. Originally Virtual Reality was created for entertainment purposes only. The power of virtual reality is now just being discovered. Its use is being expanded into things like treating phobias, psychiatric disorders and even helping to rehabilitate people. Multiple studies are being done on how virtual reality can be used to attenuate pain perception.

Current Technology Pain Managment

Today pain management can be broken down into two categories. Pharmaceutical options and non-pharmaceutical options. Pharmaceutical options include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), paracetamol and opioids. NSAIDs block the creation of prostaglandins. Repeated use of these can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding, increased risk of heart disease, and impaired renal functions. Paracetamol also blocks the creation of prostaglandins, but is not anti inflammatory to peripheral nerve cells. Paracetamol has been implicated to be a hormone disruptor and has been linked to behavioral disorders in children. Opioids are a general classification of molecules that are similar in structure, and mechanism of action. This includes heroin, morphine, oxycodone and many more. These are highly addictive and often will result in multiple harmful side effects (dizziness, nausea, vomiting, physical dependence, etc.). Non-pharmaceutical options include hypnosis, comfort therapy, neurostimulation, physical/occupational therapy, and psychosocial therapy/counseling.  Many of these are only partially effective, if effective at all.
