Present Technology
Our world is facing a problem with poverty in remote communities, drastically reducing access to quality education. For example, 70% of the Central African Republic is living in extreme poverty, and 25% of youth (15-24 years of age) unfortunately have no access to education. Citizens in certain refugee camps also reflect areas not being actively served by educators, as basic survival requirements take priority. Duolingo, Khan Academy and other learning apps are examples of current technologies being used for educating students, and these approaches in remote learning need to be leveraged for these underprivileged populations. Duolingo and Khan Academy are being used for teaching languages, math, science, and other essential subjects to educate people who want to learn from home. Both applications work by playing pre-made questions, activities, and videos to educate students. Khan Academy is a very inefficient method to educate and help students since it is not very interactive, and Duolingo is an inefficient method to learn a language because you cannot learn a language by speaking and/or interacting with a computer, certainly when there is no technology available in some populations which does not address the issue of uneducation in these communities. These current platforms also cannot answer questions or help the student when they require it. Khan Academy also creates difficulties since certain times the pre-made videos might not help the students answer the questions or the do quizzes.
It takes many many weeks to complete Duolingo even without becoming fluent in a language, and there are distracting advertisements grabbing the students attention when they should be learning, and a game-like system that is stressful for some users of the platform. Asking questions and live feedback is essential to students' education and progress, since it helps them learn independently in the future. So, in summary, to learn a subject, you need real interaction with an educator who can help you understand, keep you focused and answer your questions. What we are suggesting is a solar powered instrument that includes an AI teacher, along with tools to help with the child's educational journey, an AI that can understand a child’s way of learning and answer their questions when needed, and create lesson plans based on that information. We want to create this so underprivileged citizens won’t be deprived of the education they require.
