CELL-FREE FERMENTATION

Eduard Buchner discovers cell-free fermentation, a biochemical process where microscopic fungi with no living yeast forms alcohol from a sugar solution. This experiment proved that living cells are not necessarily needed for biochemical reactions, but instead, enzymes, a special substance formed in cells, can be used.
