In order to make Smart Tapes, several breakthroughs are required.
Carbon Fiber Backing
Since our product aims to replace post-surgery ACL braces, the backing of the tape must be strong and supportive. Carbon fiber is a material made from organic polymers and is among some of the strongest materials due to the chain-like bonds of its molecules. Despite its strength, it is very lightweight and won't restrain movement or add unnecessary weight for everyday use.
BMP-2 for Humans
BMP-2 is a type of protein that was successfully used to enhance osteoblastic activity in bone tunnels of rabbits with torn ACLs. BMP-2 helps regenerate the production of stem cells, cells with the ability to transform into specialized cells like osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and fibroblasts, which are responsible for building new bone, cartilage, and ligament, respectively. However, BMP-2 is not currently available for human use.
