LIGHT TO EXCITE

Viral vectors containing engineered light-sensitive proteins (opsins) are injected into the retinal ganglion cells, transducing that specific genome sequence into the target cells. Since each opsin responds to a specific wavelength of light, a wide range of light intensities can activate them.

BEHAVIOR MODULATION

Upon light activation, target cells are instantaneously modulated, transmitting either an excitatory or inhibitory signal to adjacent cells. In this way, the activity of neurons is controlled with just a beam of light, efficiently and safely altering the genetic code to express certain functions.
