The Future is Fungi

Substituting traditional textile fabrics with mycelium-based fabrics has the potential to positively impact the environment in multiple ways, such as reducing carbon emissions, minimizing water usage, and decreasing waste production.

The production of mycelium-based fabrics will require far less resources, energy and water that are used to produce a textile fabric.

The process of growing mycelium will eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals and will create less solid waste, dust and noise that are otherwise resulting from the textile production.

The use of mycelium-based clothes will reduce soil pollution, as it is biodegradable. That will reduce the quantities of textiles in landfills taking hundreds of years to decompose.

The use of garments made of mycelium will cut the impact the synthetic materials have to the oceans’ flora and fauna.

Human health will be also positively affected, by eliminating the use of clothes that contain hazardous chemicals that come in direct contact with human skin.

Creating mycelium fabrics will give compost an additional purpose. Using compost as a substrate to grow the mycelium will help create something new by using existing waste.
