PRESENT TECHNOLOGY

There are many pieces of present technology currently used to help people with epilepsy. We used these items to help us design the Epikit.

Embrace 2

One present technology available today is the Embrace 2. It is a smartwatch that helps people with epilepsy. Some features include a Gyroscope, an Accelerometer, and an Electrodermal sensor.  These features help people with epilepsy with their needs, such as getting updated on their epilepsy, seizure warnings, and monitoring their brain activity. It monitors their physiological signals and movement. It also has Bluetooth to connect to your tablet, smartphone, etc.

VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation)

Vagus Nerve Stimulation or VNS is a chip implanted into your chest to sense any abnormal electrical brain activity, which can be a sign of a seizure about to occur. There is also a thin wire wrapped around the left vagus nerve in the neck. VNS is programmed to send regular mild electrical energy pulses through your vagus nerve. If you feel a seizure coming on, just take the magnet provided and swipe it across the implant in your chest. This sends extra stimulation to the brain that may stop the seizure immediately. VNS therapy is a great way to control your epilepsy. VNS comes in an app so you can view your brain activity on your tablet, smartphone, etc.

EEG (Electroencephalogram)

An electroencephalogram, or EEG,  is one way of tracking seizures. An EEG is a wearable device that is very bulky and full of wires and goes on the patient's head. The wires have electrodes on the end of them that connect to your scalp and are attached to a machine. EEG uses wires and special sensors to record brain waves to check for abnormal brain activity which can cause seizures. This EEG system reads your brain activity and helps doctors diagnose patients with epilepsy and other brain disorders, or just to check if your brain is doing alright. If you feel like you need your brain checked out, you can find a neurologist who can perform EEG on you.
