History of Diabetic Treatments

1700s-1800s
Dietary Changes
Doctors discovered that when diabetics consumed healthier options, their symptoms improved.
1922
Insulin
Insulin was first used on a patient by Frederick Banting at this time.

1960
Urine Strips
Urine strips were distributed as a medication to managed blood sugar levels for both types of diabetes.
1969
Glucose Meters
More accurately measured the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients.

1970
Insulin Pump
The insulin pump becomes a common treatment. It releases insulin into the bloodstream. This also requires fewer insulin shots.
The New Technology
The use of gene therapy will change the stem cells in the pancreas to working beta cells. These beta cells will produce enough insulin to sufficiently supply the body and create a long-term solution.
