Our Vision
Biocompatible
Inclusive
Non-invasive
Amylopectin-based nanogel
Potato-derived extracellular matrix encapsulating healing factors.
Bromelain Enzymes
Pineapple-based debriding agent that minimizes scarring.
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
Immunocompatible CRISPR-modified cells harvested from the patient's skin to promote re-epithelialization of skin.
Carbon Nanodots
Nitrogen-Doped quantum dots derived from urea and citric acid that contain antimicrobial factors.
Testing Our Product
Before our product comes to fruition, various factors must be tested including healing potency, nanodot effectiveness, and physical differences such as blood oxygen flow.
Specifically looking at one of our experiments, to test the effectiveness of our healing factors…
Step One: Preparing to Experiment
-
Heat water to approx. 100 degrees Celsius.
-
Acquire 50 adult male mice as experimental subjects.
-
Shave off the mice's hair to provide exposed skin.
Step Two: Experimental Process
-
Randomly assign mice to the experimental and control groups.
-
Pour the water onto the backs of all the mice.
-
Provide scaffold treatment to the experimental group. The control group receives no treatment.
Step Three: Collect Data
-
Collect quantitative and qualitative data over time.
-
Quantitative data:
-
Time taken for scar formation.
-
Depth and size of burns over time.
-
-
Qualitative data:
-
Observe signs of infection and mice's ability for movement and overall physical health over time.
-
-
Step Four: Analyze Biological Processes
-
Using two-photon microscopy, observe:
-
Fibroblast migration
-
Endothelial/epithelial growth.
-
Interaction of inflammatory cells, collagen fibers, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells.
-
Step Five: Data Analysis + Conclusion
-
Using the collected data, assess the effectiveness of the scaffold in wound healing:
-
Productivity of tissue regeneration
-
Progress in wound healing over time
-
Appearance of wound in comparison to the control
-
Prototype Video

My relationship with Ian is that he’s my nephew. When he got burned it was a Saturday when I had a shift and I didn’t think that his burns were as bad when I heard but I asked my niece to take him to the doctor and they told her that we needed to take him to the hospital for burn victims. When I got to the hospital, I saw his face and chest and they told me that they needed to admit him because the burns were deep 2nd degree burns. It has affected his daily life because the sun makes his cheeks go very red so he can’t be out freely and the scars on his chest and neck, and his legs too because they cut some of his skin off to make a graft which I think was unnecessary because it didn’t stick 100%. I think it’s because he was a baby and would scratch himself. And well the injuries that he had has affected me. It hurt me to see him like that and when they would give him treatment they would put him to sleep because it would hurt him a lot. So, they put him under anesthesia to cure him. There were a lot of kids in the hospital that have gone through things like Ian and others that are more serious because unfortunately there isn’t an economy where parents can stop working and get help. Ian suffered a lot when I would take him to get treated after he was released because I knew that he needed to get examined. Even if it wasn’t the same hospital he would still cry when I would take him because he would get scared or I don't know… Maybe he thought that I was going to leave him in the hospital again I don't know. It wasn't simple. We met a boy who is called Chuchito there. He’s older than Ian, he was three and he’s from Michoacán. And apparently the guy that was with him was his dad because when some bad people lit up their house on fire, the mom went to rescue Chuchito and another boy but the person that ended up the most burnt was Chuchito because his face was just melted. There I learned that water burns and fire burns aren't the same. His fingers were melted too and his life is just a blessing because he would still walk and he would put effort. Another story was from a boy who went up the attic chasing after his pets and it was raining so there was a high voltage cable and the electricity pulled him and it hurt him. So from there they took him from the hospital because they couldn’t do anything for him there. They took him to a different hospital. A kid said that if they were going to cut his legs off he would prefer to die. There were a lot more stories of the kids who got burnt. And there’s a very strong infection that they can get in their ear. That virus that kids can get can even make them die. It's a very delicate situation and just really sad.
