Burns were first recorded as early as 1000 BC (Lie). Further analysis of burn severity arose during the 17th century but many recent advancements in burn care during the 19th century. Some of these advancements include various topical treatments and autografts.

Early signs of wound care. Many ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese recorded topical methods primarily derived from plants and animals to treat burns. 

18th Century

The Heister and Richter burn severity classification was introduced, separating burns into three categories based on nerve damage and burn depth

1871

The first autograft that used skin from a different human donor was recorded.

1876

Further physiological applications were developed regarding burn body surface area analysis and implemented in Dr. CB Smart’s observations of a boat crash incident.

1970s

Compression therapy techniques started being used.

1973

Further advancements to topical treatments were made, introducing Silvadene into the market by incorporating antimicrobial properties. 

1976

Fibrin growth was starting to be used to promote skin cell growth. 

2015

Ultrasound mist therapy was first introduced as a water-based treatment for wound healing.
