Over 26 million people have asthma or about 7.7% of Americans according to the CDC. They also state there are over 3,500 deaths that occur despite current medications and technologies. Our project is a wearable device— “Breathe Buddy”—that continuously monitors heart rate, oxygen levels, and respiratory patterns to prevent asthma attacks before they start. Our team has personally experienced the short falls of inhalers like having one that expired or was not easily available. Unlike current inhalers and nebulizers, the Breathe Buddy alerts users when breathing changes so they know an attack may be coming. Parents get instant notifications as well if the medicine is running low or expired. If needed, micro-doses of medication are released through transdermal micro-pumps. By blending artificial intelligence with convenient, wearable technology, our solution will lower the risk of surprise asthma attacks, minimize user error, and eliminate the need to carry items, which are easy to forget.
Breathe Buddy will drastically improve the life of people with asthma!

Our Solution
-
Hands-Free and Always On
Breathe Buddy is worn like a watch, so there’s no need to fumble for an inhaler during an emergency. -
No Need to Time Breathing - Unlike inhalers that require a deep breath at the exact moment of release, Breathe Buddy gently delivers medicine through the skin in a pinch—no coordination needed, which is hard when you are having trouble breathing!
-
Early Warning System
Built-in sensors monitor vital signs and give alerts before an asthma attack starts, something inhalers can’t do. -
Discreet and Quiet
The delivery is silent and subtle—so kids feel less self-conscious. -
Continuous Monitoring
Breathe Buddy tracks health 24/7, offering data and patterns to help manage asthma better over time.
