Problem: 

According to USDOT, icy road conditions contribute to 1,900 deaths and 135,000 injuries annually in the U.S., posing a major safety risk. With over 70 percent of the nation's roads located in snowy regions, freezing road conditions are a major problem, causing significant damage to life and property. Snow and ice reduce pavement friction and vehicle maneuverability, causing slower speeds, reduced roadway capacity, increased crash risk, and high death rates.

Climate change worsens the issue with icy roads by increasing moisture in the atmosphere, leading to more freezing rain that sticks to roads and creates slick, glassy surfaces, which are more hazardous than snow-packed roads.

Today's solutions for icy roads, such as salting, sanding, and other anti-icing solutions, are ineffective, expensive and harm the environment, vehicles, and roads.
