The NanoVaders

BGA blooms are a major environmental and health threat to Floridians near the Everglades Watershed. With increasing global temperatures, and eutrophication of the Watershed caused by anthropogenic agricultural and industrial developments, BGA blooms are more frequent and innovative technologies are needed to prevent and control harmful blooms. We designed the NanoVader using iron oxide nanoparticles to sense chemicals released by the harmful algae, detect the presence of nitrates and phosphates, and absorb these chemicals to prevent the growth of cyanobacteria.
