1887-1888
Glass lenses
In 1887, A German manufacturer F.A. Muller created the first glass contact that covered the entire eye and served as a protective lens.
In 1888, Adolf Eugen Fick, a German physiologist, altered F.A. Muller glass contact design to correct vision.
1950s
Soft lenses
First soft contact lens was created by chemist Otto Wichterle who used hydrogels to create a more flexible and comfortable lens.
1971-today
Marketing Contact Lenses
In 1971, the FDA approved the marketing and manufacturing of soft contact lenses.
Today, 140 million people worldwide wear contact lens. They are used to correct vision and as decorative lenses, but are also projected to be used in targeted drug delivery and to slow progressive eye diseases.
